Incendiary weapons produce heat and fire through the chemical reaction of a flammable substance. They cause terrible burn wounds and damage to civilians and civilian objects, often leading to long term harm and psychological trauma.
Overall objective of the activities
Freedom of religion in Ukraine is upheld in a peaceful way, rights of religious minorities are upheld and safeguarded, and mutual understanding and non-violent dialogue between communities of different religious denominations is increased in the context of the recognition of an autocephalous Orthodox Church of Ukraine.
Arts and culture can be an effective means to bring people together across sectarian divides. Establishing independent creative spaces in conflict or post-conflict settings is not an easy quest; it can be a highly political endeavour, and is often not prioritised in peacebuilding efforts. PAX has been working with Lebanese organisation Tiro Association for Arts in the south of Lebanon since 2015, supporting them to break through existing social divisions by bringing (young) people together from different backgrounds to re-activate culture and connect with one another.
During the years of LRA violence in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), communities suffered from large scale abductions of children, mutilations, killings, rapes, looting and destruction. For a mission to succeed in its efforts to protect civilians and mitigate civilian harm, military personnel must be adequately trained and equipped with the right capabilities to act in accordance with Protection of Civilians (PoC) policy, guidelines and doctrine while at the same time be cognisant of civilian perspectives. This requirement is the focus of the Protection in Practice Project.
In 2017, PAX’s Gender, Peace and Security (GPS) team established a Gender Pilot Fund to encourage PAX country programmes to implement actions that underpin, boost, and further develop PAX’s focus on gender. The aim was to generate lessons and insights to deepen conceptual and practical awareness of gender-related issues across the organisation and to increase the gender-sensitivity of the different programmes.
