In 2021, Ian Lundin and Alex Schneiter from Lundin Oil have been indicted for complicity in grave war crimes in Sudan from 1999 to 2003. PAX has been working on the Lundin case for over a decade. PAX believes that justice for the victims of the civil wars in Sudan and South Sudan is a prerequisite for peace and reconciliation. For justice to be done, it is crucial that all perpetrators and their accomplices are held to account and that those who have benefitted from crimes do not escape their duty to contribute to the victims’ right to remedy and reparation.
Nuclear weapons are the worst weapons ever created. They are designed to destroy cities. They are weapons of mass destruction, and were outlawed in the 2017 UN Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons. PAX, works towards the rapid entry into force of the ban treaty as well as building public recognition of the catastrophic humanitarian consequences of any use of nuclear weapons.
The Ecumenical Accompaniment Programme in Palestine and Israel (EAPPI) guarantees the protective presence of international observers in fragile communities on the West Bank including East Jerusalem. Monitoring developments in the occupied territories and reporting human rights violations brings extra protection. Key principles of the programme are: nonviolence, monitoring of human rights violations, protective presence, standing with local peace and human rights groups, advocacy, and principled impartiality.
An important (and challenging) part of peacebuilding work – alongside conflict resolution, political dialogue, inclusive participation and so forth – is behavioural change. Influencing harmful and entrenched ideas, beliefs and attitudes takes time and requires innovative approaches. Engaging in the cultural sector, particularly film, can be an effective tool to do so.
What are killer robots? Killer robots are autonomous weapon systems that can select and attack targets without meaningful human control. Which means the weapon system can use lethal force without a direct instruction from a human operator. This could apply to various weapon systems, for instance a battle tank, a fighter jet or a warship.
The arms trade can fuel ongoing conflicts and lead to serious human rights violations by repressive regimes and armed groups. Peace organisation PAX works towards stricter and more effective Dutch and international arms transfer controls. Since 2003 it has been an active member of the international Control Arms coalition committed to work towards a strong Arms Trade Treaty (ATT).
The International Campaign to Ban Landmines (ICBL) has been working to achieve a world without Landmines for over 20 years. As an active member, PAX takes part in this campaign to make sure landmines are eradicated for good. We encourage countries to commit themselves to the Mine Ban Treaty (MBT). We encourage states that are already members to strictly implement the treaty
Peace organisation PAX works to ban cluster munitions everywhere in the world. Our aim is to ensure strict compliance with the Convention on Cluster Munitions and call on states that have not yet done so to join the treaty. The convention categorically prohibits the use, production, stockpiling and transfer of cluster munitions.
