The International Campaign to Ban Landmines (ICBL) has been working to achieve a world without Landmines for over 20 years. As an active member, PAX takes part in this campaign to make sure landmines are eradicated for good. We encourage countries to commit themselves to the Mine Ban Treaty (MBT). We encourage states that are already members to strictly implement the treaty
Peace organisation PAX works to ban cluster munitions everywhere in the world. Our aim is to ensure strict compliance with the Convention on Cluster Munitions and call on states that have not yet done so to join the treaty. The convention categorically prohibits the use, production, stockpiling and transfer of cluster munitions.
An important (and challenging) part of peacebuilding work – alongside conflict resolution, political dialogue, inclusive participation and so forth – is behavioural change. Influencing harmful and entrenched ideas, beliefs and attitudes takes time and requires innovative approaches. Engaging in the cultural sector, particularly film, can be an effective tool to do so.
Overall objective of the activities
Freedom of religion in Ukraine is upheld in a peaceful way, rights of religious minorities are upheld and safeguarded, and mutual understanding and non-violent dialogue between communities of different religious denominations is increased in the context of the recognition of an autocephalous Orthodox Church of Ukraine.
Arts and culture can be an effective means to bring people together across sectarian divides. Establishing independent creative spaces in conflict or post-conflict settings is not an easy quest; it can be a highly political endeavour, and is often not prioritised in peacebuilding efforts. PAX has been working with Lebanese organisation Tiro Association for Arts in the south of Lebanon since 2015, supporting them to break through existing social divisions by bringing (young) people together from different backgrounds to re-activate culture and connect with one another.
During the years of LRA violence in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), communities suffered from large scale abductions of children, mutilations, killings, rapes, looting and destruction. Now, many ex-LRA members are returning to their families and communities, yet the relationship between them and the victims of violence is undoubtedly disturbed and social cohesion and trust is weak.
The Women and Girls for Change: Building sustainable peace and gender equality in South Sudan programme strives towards an empowering and inclusive environment where women and girls feel safe and are enabled to realise their rights and opportunities to play a significant role towards sustainable peace in South Sudan.
In June 2019, PAX and partner organization Ukrainian Centre for Nonviolent Communication (NVC) and Reconciliation ‘Dignity Space’ started the project ‘Dialogue for Conflict resolution’. This is a continuation of the project ‘Culture of dialogue and constructive engagement in Ukraine’. Both projects build and anchor capacity for dialogue in the Ukrainian society and (political) systems.
The Human Security Survey (HSS) is a survey methodology developed by PAX which includes a series of complementary activities, including population-based research, community engagement, and advocacy.
For a mission to succeed in its efforts to protect civilians and mitigate civilian harm, military personnel must be adequately trained and equipped with the right capabilities to act in accordance with Protection of Civilians (PoC) policy, guidelines and doctrine while at the same time be cognisant of civilian perspectives. This requirement is the focus of the Protection in Practice Project.
