In the cross-border area between Ituri in the DR Congo and East Equatoria in South Sudan there has been instability for a long time.
Recently, this trend was reinforced by the proximity of the civil war in South Sudan and the massive influx of South Sudanese refugees in Ituri since mid-2016.

The triggering factor for this study was that there were signs of considerable tension between refugees and the local population in 2017 and 2018. The research focuses on both the refugees in the sites as well as those living in the villages of Northern Ituri and even in host families. In the report a comparison is made between those different settings. The research results are being used to improve the programme. UNHCR used the report for some policy changes for which they approached the office of PAX in Bunia to bring them into contact with local peace groups.
