Idlib calling: Mustafa is dead

The people in Idlib are not only suffering from the Russian and Syrian bombing, but also from lawlessness. Ahmad describes what happened.

“Sorry that I couldn’t talk yesterday. Mustafa was murdered. We heard shots in the street. That happens  often enough, but this time it was really close. When we went to look, we saw him lying there. The shooter fled. If they catch him, they’ll kill him.”

“I’ve known Mustafa for years, but he’s not a close friend or anything.”

“We’ve got a big problem in our society. It’s not just the misery from Bashar al-Assad, we’re also suffering from the violence of the militias and thugs. I told you about my nephew, didn’t I? A month ago they kidnapped him and a friend of his. The thugs demanded a lot of money: 50,000 dollars. To make their point, they shot my nephew’s friend and dumped his body in the street. That convinced my uncle and he came up with the money. It worked – they released my nephew.”

“This might sound a bit odd, but I still have faith that it will get better. Don’t ask me where it comes from, but I’m sure that someday it will be better.”
