Project Officer Lobby & Advocacy (South Sudan)

PAX is looking for a new

(36 hours per week)

In Africa, PAX is active in South Sudan, Sudan, the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), and in the Sahel region. PAX is looking to recruit an experienced Project Officer Lobby & Advocacy for its largest program in South Sudan, contributing to peace projects, together in a dynamic national team. The South Sudan team comprises of 8 Juba-based staff and 3 Utrecht-based staff and is headed by two senior management staff in Juba and one Senior Policy Lead based in Utrecht, in collaboration with PAX Africa Team Lead and PAX thematic departments.

What will you do?

The Project Officer provides adequate support to the senior staff members of PAX South Sudan program maximizing the program’s key lobby priorities and evidence-based advocacy and will travel frequently inside South Sudan. The Project Officer contributes to the promotion of the women peace and security agenda and church-led nation-wide Action Plan for Peace advocacy and communication, both in country as well as international.

Main Tasks

  • Contribute to implementation of lobby and advocacy priorities;
  • Lobby & advocacy with national and international, mainly political actors;
  • Assist PAX local partners in lobby and advocacy work within existing peace projects focused on key lobby priorities;
  • Contribute to evidence-based advocacy research and implementation;
  • Manage the Leaders of Peace project activities which are primarily lobby and advocacy related contributing to the women, peace and security agenda;
  • Steering and outcome harvesting of lobby priorities, contributing to a learning agenda;
  • Contribute to relation-building with (international) partners and donors for joint lobby initiatives and program implementation;
  • Contribute to fundraising.

Who are we looking for?

  • Academic degree (BA, MA) preference, preferably in a relevant field such as Conflict studies, International relations, Politics or Law, Communication;
  • At least 5 years relevant professional experience with extensive diplomatic, communication and lobby skills;
  • Excellent understanding and proven experience of the political dimensions of conflicts and dynamics of peace work. Knowledge of and experience with advocacy, communication and programming in the field of peacebuilding, conflict transformation, dealing with the past, the political economy, natural resources and conflict, gender, peace & security;
  • Understanding of women, peace and security and gender-related work in South Sudan is desirable;
  • Understanding of and experience with church-led peacebuilding, lobby and advocacy work in South Sudan is desirable;
  • Prior experience in project management is strongly desirable;
  • Able to work responsibly under pressure; able to work individually as well as in a team;
  • Cultural sensitivity; open and tolerant attitude towards others; out-of-the-box thinker;
  • Fluency in English is required;
  • Capacity and willingness to travel inside South Sudan on a regular basis;
  • Eligible to work in South Sudan.
