Urgent and important International Court of Justice ruling

International Court of Justice rules that genocide is imminent in Gaza and therefore measures are needed. PAX has been pleading for de-escalation and a ceasefire in Gaza for months and welcomes this ruling.

The International Court of Justice rules that there is a serious threat of genocide taking place and that Israel must take measures to prevent genocide. Those responsible for calling for genocide must also be punished and evidence that genocide is being committed must be preserved. More humanitarian aid to Gaza is also ordered. Within a month, Israel must let the court know how it will implement the ruling.

South Africa went to the international court last month over (threats of) genocide in Gaza and earlier this month explained why measures are needed. Israel countered. The International Court of Justice, based in The Hague, is the main court within the United Nations, dealing with disputes between states.

PAX believes the Netherlands should follow up on the ruling. Prime Minister Rutte must now call for a ceasefire to allow humanitarian aid, and end arms supplies to Israel immediately.

Together with Oxfam Novib and The Rights Forum, PAX went to court in the Netherlands over deliveries of components for F-35 fighter jets, which are heading to Israel from a base in Woensdrecht. This must be stopped, is our demand. An appeal ruling will follow on 12 February. That the International Court of Justice is now ruling that measures are needed strengthens our confidence in a positive ruling in our case.
