Miriam Struyk is the new Director of Programmes at PAX.

With Ms Struyk, the peacebuilding organization now has an experienced woman in management, who, together with General Director Jan Gruiters and a yet to be named Director of Organizational Development, will pilot the organization through an increasingly unstable and violent world.

Ms Struyk began her career at PAX in 1996 in the wake of the war in the former Yugoslavia. She was stationed in the Balkans. Later, she came back to the Netherlands and headed up PAX’s lobbying efforts. Her interest in the Balkans remained, and expanded to include the southern Caucuses and other conflict areas.

For the past ten years, she has been responsible for creating and leading the Humanitarian Disarmament department. She supervised specialists leading international coalitions working on armed drones, cluster munitions and nuclear weapons. Ms Struyk played a leading role in, among other things, the creation of the international Convention on Cluster Munitions and is to this day programme leader for PAX for the killer robots programme.

In other words, an experienced peace activist, with extensive knowledge of PAX and the complexities of peace building. With her appointment, the successor to Freek Landmeter has now partially been filled. The new Director of Organizational Development will assume the rest of his responsibilities.
