North Korean leader Kim Jong-un has committed to work toward denuclearization in an agreement signed with US President Donald Trump in Singapore.
Even though the vague nature of the agreement and the lack of other specific details was received with disappointment by analysts and it is too early to say how this agreement will play out, it could be an important step towards denuclearization of the Korean peninsula. In the meantime, the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (ICAN), in which PAX plays a leading role, has concrete ideas for steps that Trump and Kim Jong-un should take, such as the signing of the UN Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW).
‘Roadmap’: a five-step plan for Korean peninsula
If Trump and Kim really want today’s summit to do more than just capture the world’s attention, they must embark on a long-term plan to real and lasting peace. Beatrice Fihn, director of ICAN, is in Singapore to present a new five-step plan to denuclearize the Korean peninsula and to remind leaders present and watching that they can and must take action for a world free of nuclear weapons.
Denuclearization of the Korean peninsula is possible and can be achieved by following five steps:
1. Recognize the risk of nuclear use and the unacceptable humanitarian consequences of such use
2. Reject nuclear weapons by joining the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW)
3. Remove North Korea’s nuclear weapons through a verifiable and irreversible plan
4. Ratify the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT)
5. Rejoin the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) and world community
