After four days of negotiations in Addis Ababa between delegations of the Government of South Sudan and the Cobra Faction of the South Sudan Democratic Movement/ South Sudan Defence Army (SSDM/A) – as the rebels of General David Yau Yau style themselves – agreement has been reached on the modalities of the cease-fire that was proclaimed by President Salva Kiir on 6 January 2014 and accepted by General David Yau Yau. Dutch peace organization PAX has facilitated these negotiations.
As of today, Wednesday 29 January 2014, peace movement IKV Pax Christi will continue under the name of PAX. The new name clearly indicates what the movement stands for and works for: peace.
In today’s statement on the serious situation in the Central African Republic, Pax Christi International calls the international community – especially the European Union and its member states, as well as the African Union – to increase their efforts to help bringing violence to an end, to ensure a return to the rule of law and to guarantee access to humanitarian aid to the thousands of refugees and displaced persons.
