PAX works to prohibit and regulate autonomous weapons systems. The growing reliance on the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in military decision-making as well as the development of autonomous weapon systems, raises many ethical, legal, humanitarian and security questions.
Together with a broad coalition of organizations worldwide, the Stop Killer Robots campaign, PAX supports the development of international legal and other norms that ensure meaningful human control in the use of force, counter digital dehumanisation, and reduce automated harm. The rapid technological developments make it imperative for both regulators as well as producers to stick to the fundamental principles of humanity, to ensure compliance with international law and to reinforce where the boundaries lie. As key stakeholders, financial institutions have the ability and the responsibility to mitigate these risks.
This paper offers recommendations for financial institutions to prevent them from contributing to a world in which machines are making decisions over life and death.
