Pope Francis was a moral compass in a divided and unjust world. He stood up for those who are rarely heard: the poor, refugees, prisoners, and people fleeing from war. In both word and deed, he called for solidarity, compassion, and respect for the dignity of every human being. Pope Francis spoke out powerfully against the current genocide in Gaza: “This is cruelty, not a war.” He condemned the violence, called for an immediate ceasefire, and repeatedly emphasized that the suffering of innocent civilians is unbearable and must end. The Pope had a daily phone call with the Catholic parish in Gaza and continued to do so up to his last days.

Director Rolien Sasse met Pope Francis in 2019: ‘It is very special how he always dedicated his papacy to the weaker members of society and did so even on the day of his death. He was an example of humility and connection, and a tireless inspiration for peace. He was incredibly kind and warm, with a smile and a question for everyone.’

His papacy was marked by simplicity, humanity, and closeness. He brought people together across religious and cultural divides, continually showing that faith and justice are inextricably linked. Pope Francis touched the hearts of many, including within the peace movement. We continue to be strengthened by his message of solidarity, and he will remain a source of inspiration.
