We are witnessing the rise of anti-democratic and anti-rule-of-law movements around the world. We are seeing hatred grow and division being encouraged. Even in the Netherlands, the democratic rule of law is under pressure, and increasingly so. The Netherlands is following an extreme right-wing strategy preaching ‘Netherlands First’. Civil society is given less space, and criticism is less tolerated. We must speak out against this.
The government is eroding basic rights, such as the right to protest and freedom of expression. Demonstrations are increasingly restricted, activists and institutions are sidelined, and police violence against protesters is on the rise. This undermines democracy. We should encourage activists who fight injustice, advocate for peace, and stand up against abuse of power, not attack them. Power should lie with the citizens.
The Netherlands’ foreign policy is also concerning. Humanitarian aid is being limited while military investments are increasing. This needs to be balanced. Politics should prioritize international law and the protection of civilians. Yet, we see that military cooperation with states that massively violate human rights, such as Israel, continues.
History has shown the disastrous consequences of fascism and racism for peace. Therefore, we are joining the National Demonstration Against Racism and Fascism on Saturday, March 22, 2025, at 2:00 PM on the Dam in Amsterdam. Demonstrations against racism and discrimination will take place worldwide on this day. We, too, must speak out for a future where freedom, equality, and humanity remain central.
