Burkina Faso: The Heroines of Peace in Action

The Yadga region in Burkina Faso has long struggled with insecurity and radicalization. Over the past years, we have supported the Association féminine pour le développement du Burkina (AFEDEB) in their ‘Heroines of Peace’ project, aimed at countering radicalization and violent extremism. To date, this initiative has reached more than 27,000 people.

Since 2021, AFEDEB has implemented the ‘Heroines of Peace Against Radicalization and Violent Extremism in the Yadga Region’ project across the provinces of Yatenga, Lorum, Passoré, and Zondoma. The organization has conducted training sessions for youth, women, community leaders, and internally displaced persons. These sessions focused on gender-based violence, the prevention of radicalization, and violent extremism. Participants learned to recognize early signs of conflict and resolve disputes before they escalate. From these trainings, 56 ‘heroines and heroes of peace’ emerged, serving as ambassadors in their communities. They organize awareness campaigns and mediate local conflicts.

‘The heroines of peace have not only resolved conflicts but also created safe spaces for dialogue and reconciliation.’

Results and impact

The project was funded through PAX’s SCC project. In addition to training the Heroines of Peace, 405 discussion forums were organized, 175 home visits conducted, 5 educational theater performances staged, and 15 training workshops held. Over 27,750 individuals have directly benefited from the actions of the heroines and heroes of peace, local associations, and community leaders.

Local Initiatives for Lasting Peace

The efforts of the Association Féminine pour le Développement du Burkina demonstrate that local initiatives play a crucial role in promoting peace and security. However, more support is needed. Governments, international organizations, and civil society must continue to back local peace initiatives. Only through collective efforts in an environment free from violence and radicalization can sustainable peace be achieved.
