Iran and the US have negotiated in recent weeks over Iran’s nuclear program. The US is convinced that Iran continued its nuclear activities after last summer’s attacks. President Trump is dissatisfied with the negotiations with Iran.
We unequivocally condemn these attacks. Without any claim of self-defense and without authorization from the UN Security Council, this action is simply illegal. It is yet another violation of international law by the US and Israel – only recently, the US attacked Venezuela and abducted its president, Maduro. With this attack on Iran, a long-held wish of Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu is being fulfilled. Israel has also carried out repeated attacks on neighboring countries in recent years.
Pretext of the US and Israel
The pretext of the US and Israel – to dismantle Iran’s nuclear program – is just that: a pretext. Of course, Iran must not acquire nuclear weapons, but there is no evidence that the country is working toward this. Even US intelligence agencies stated as much in 2025. In fact, attacking Iran – again – will only strengthen the position of those in the country who advocate for nuclear weapons.
In the past, diplomacy has proven effective in restraining Iran’s nuclear program. In 2015, an agreement was reached with Iran, the JCPOA, which Iran complied with. But US President Trump tore up this deal during his first term.
Furthermore, the focus on the threat of nuclear weapons is hypocritical, given that the US and Israel possess nuclear weapons themselves. If there were a genuine interest in a world without nuclear weapons, these countries could contribute far more than Iran.
The people of Iran deserve peace
Aggressive actions like these only fuel further escalation and undermine the diplomatic paths needed for true stability.
Our thoughts are with the people of Iran, who deserve peace and already suffer under internal repression – oppression, torture, murder, and exploitation – compounded by Western sanctions. These airstrikes result in civilian casualties and risk destabilizing the entire region. The attack on Iran must be halted immediately to protect civilians.
We call on the Dutch government to unequivocally condemn these illegal attacks and to pursue diplomatic solutions.
