No European weapons to Sudan
The war in Sudan has been raging for more than two years and has claimed the lives of over 150.000 of civilians. There is an urgent need for an immediate ceasefire and allowing humanitarian aid. The fall of El Fasher marks a defining moment. This forces a choice. The people of Sudan do not need more words of sympathy. What they need is protection, justice, and an end to all forms of European involvement that fuel this ethnical violence.
Research shows that European arms and trade continue to feed the horrific war in Sudan. Despite the European embargo, weapons are being re-exported through other countries, such as the United Arab Emirates, to armed forces in Sudan. In this way, European weapons help sustain the conflict. The Netherlands must take a strong position within Europe to end this arms trade involvement.
We call on the Dutch government to take action within the European context on the following points:
- Stricter arms export controls, ensuring that European weapons no longer reach warring parties in Sudan
- A suspension of European arms exports to countries that re-export weapons to Sudan
- Support for a full UN-arms embargo on Sudan
- Support international investigations (e.g. by the International Criminal Court) and the prosecution of all those responsible for war crimes in Sudan
